15 juin: SOAS

Hier 15 juin je me suis retrouvé à la bibliothèque de la SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) pendant toute l’aprês-midi jusqu’au soir. A un moment donné, je suis descendu à la réception pour remettre les cinq recueils de poèmes que mon collègue Nlandu Mamingi m’a confiés pour la bibliothèque.

 - Hello Sir, these five books have been sent by the author for the library.
- Hello Sir, it is not as simple as that, I am afraid. 

- Can I leave them with you? 

- Yes, I will submit them to our specialist to decide if we take them or not. There is no space. In the case we cannot take them, please leave a contact address where to reach you. 

- Is there a form I can sign for this kind of donation?
- No, there is not. Just your email address suffices. By tomorrow, you will receive an answer. 

- As a specialist of literature, I can assert that Mamingi’s poetry is of high quality. If the library rejects it, I am ready to challenge the decision. One the other hand it is a gift from the writer himself. - I am sorry. Our specialist will decide and I can’t guarantee we will accept all the items. Thank you however for the gift.

Je suis reparti relativement déçu par cette conversation qui s’est révélée à la limite de la méprise et de l’offense. A Cambridge deux jours auparavant, ces mêmes livres ont été reçus sans réserve et avec reconnaissance. Comme partout, beaucoup dépend de l’individu qui vous reçoit à la porte. Je suis pourtant bien placé pour juger de la valeur littéraire d’une oeuvre. D'autre part, ne pas prendre tous les livres serait arbitraire et myope selon moi. Cette bibliothèque où je passe presque chaque année possède une bonne dizaine de mes publications (livres, articles, recensions). La vie m’a appris à garder mon profil bas. Voici l’email que j’ai reçu de Miss Dawn Wright ce 16 juin:
