Isidore Okpewho (November 9, 1942 - September 4, 2016)
(Cross-posted from the ALA list)
It is with great sadness that I write to let you know of the death of a giant of African literature; a teacher, activist, mentor to many, and friend of the ALA, Professor Isidore Okpewho. He died peacefully at a hospital in Binghamton, NY. During his distinguished career as a prolific writer and the foremost scholar of oral literature, Professor Okpewho taught at the University of New York at Buffalo (1974-76), the University of Ibadan (1976-1990), Harvard University (1990-1991) and since, at the State University of New York at Binghamton. He was awarded the 2011 Fonlon-Nichols prize.
