What happened in Burundi this week is very interesting. President Nkurunziza is back to his country; he actually never lost power and got it back very easily. His loyalist military held the strategic sites of power: the airport, the national radio and television facilities, the presidential palace under control. Now that he is back, the scenario opens ideal spaces for him to strengthen his will to run for a third mandate. His supporters are now convinced that he is the right man to lead the country. He is the real winner of this situation. Everything works in his favour and from now on nothing can prevent him from wining the elections despite some resistance here and there.
All countries condemned the coup d'etat attempt fearing a new bloodshed on an ethnic scale in a country that went through a long time of civil war. Again this is politics: the democratization process still forms a challenge in Burundi as it is in other African countries. We African still have a lot to learn in terms of democracy.
