March 11, 2016, 6pm. Yesterday took place in the Humanities Quadriangle at Cave Hill Campus a special celebratio: Professors Jane Bryce, Hazel Simmons McDonald, Mark McWatt stepped down as editors of Pou. They were the founding editors of the Caribbean Creative Writing Journal since 1999 and have published 16 issues of Poui. About 50 colleagues, writers, students and guests gathered to celebrate this milestone of the Department of Language, Linguistics and Literature. In my capacity as Head of Department, I had the pleasure and the honour to open the floor. Creative Writing has been taught in LLL Department since 1998 and Poui Journal is a straight emanation of this course. In the years many creative writing students were published alongside local, regional and international writers. Poui has made the reputation of our Department and Faculty far beyond the Caribbean. The new editorial team include Mr. Robert Leyshon and Dr. Nicola Hunte, all colleagues of the discipline of Literatures in English.
Reception and launch of Poui No 16 were done together. We first met in the Quadriangle for about 15 - 20 minutes to enjoy some refreshments and snacks before entering the Art Lecture Theatre where speech and reading of excerpts of Puoi were held. The wine was good, according to Barbadian realities. Writers, colleagues and students read interesting poems, short stories. Dr Fan Ruoen read six short poems in Chinese. Every founding member also read excerpts from his creative texts. Poet McWatt read for example his "Outhouse", a toilet house in a banana plantation. I can state that there is a real aesthetic school at Cave Hill. The whole ceremony of torch exchange was informal, very friendly, without protocol. All colleagues and guests were happy to be part of the event. Congratulations colleagues and long life to Puoi! All the best to the Founding Editors of Poui.
